architecture and interior design
in Highland Scotland
M&J Design is an architectural and interior design practice established by Francis and Shona Jones in 2008. From a base near Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland, we offer the very best of contemporary architectural and interior design combined with a love of technology and a respect for the environment. Take a look at our News page> for information about our latest projects.
We can provide a full architectural design service to our clients, including the co-ordination of any additional professionals such as engineers. Francis takes the lead on our architectural service, having qualified as an architect in 1982 and worked with several high profile architectural firms before setting up M&J Design.
We'll produce a fully integrated design solution suited to your individual requirements, local authority planning regulations and the individual needs of each site. See examples of some of our work on our New build, Conversions and extensions and Commercial pages.
Interior design is not mere decoration or the selection of furniture - although these can be provided as part of our overall service. Our interior design service is tailored to suit each individual project and can also be provided to complement the architectural design which may also have been provided by M&J Design.
Shona, who leads on interior design projects, is also a highly experienced space planner and has worked for companies of widely varying sizes with differing disciplines and requirements. She has been responsible for space planning projects ranging in size from small numbers of staff to upward of 1300. Find out more on our Interior Design page.
We have a strong belief in early discussions with local authority planners, a belief backed by a long history of successful high profile projects in both the English and Scottish planning systems. Most planning departments operate a pre-planning service and we'll use this to help avoid any unnecessary delays further on in the process.
Health & safety in construction has been growing in importance since the original introduction of the CDM Construction (Design+Management) Regulations in 1995. CDM imposes duties on all members of the design and construction teams - as well as the client - and now applies to all projects where there is more than one contractor. We are happy to advise on the duties a client has to take on board, as well as providing the service of Principal Designer, a role created in the CDM 2015 Regulations.
Renewable energy has risen in profile since the introduction of Feed in Tariffs (FIT) and the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). This is an ever moving target but we are able to give clear, up to the minute and experience-based advice on the best low carbon solutions for your project. Experienced in working closely with a number of renewable energy providers in the area, we are well placed to ensure your project meets your carbon footprint and energy saving objectives.
At M&J Design we can provide solutions to any project requirement. For example, we can provide a design-only solution where the requirement is simply obtaining Planning Permission. Alternatively, we can provide a Planning and Building Warrant service where the client wishes to take on the Construction or Project Management role (remembering always the need for a Principal Designer and Principal Contractor). A third option is to provide a complete turnkey service, where M&J Design act as Project Manager or Construction Manager to suit the client’s requirements.
Not everyone comes with a clear cut idea as to how their project will be achieved. At M&J Design we believe that we can make the process much clearer, helping you to select the best option for your individual circumstances.
